We are meant to evolve out of attention seeking behaviours. For some this happens at the toddler stage. If however, their needs are not met by the adults around them, they can continue to seek attention. Often this is because they are not given enough praise and or boundaries in order to feel good enough. For some their evolution happens after teenage hood. They mature into emotional independence when they develop a feeling of self-worth which comes from getting to know the self and how the ego reacts to similar situations consistently. Sometimes they get blocked from this development due to the relationships they encounter. Some find themselves in a negative cycle where the projection of their main relationships do not meet their emotional needs. When this happens, it is difficult to rise above the ego in order to control toddler and or teenage behaviours. People get stuck in this phase of development and continue to react and behave in order to drive attention towards themselves. In psychotherapy, we explore diversity of experience with empathy and without judgement.
