Compulsive giving can be a sign of co-dependency.

When we give too much, it can be detrimental to our health both emotionally and physically. It can also lead to a toxic relationship of co-dependency. Generosity comes from a healthy place and at times when our own needs are being met. Over giving is often considered selfless, yet often the over giver finds it difficult to receive and can unconsciously foster an expectation of return. This may feed a need to be appreciated and develop a feeling of being required by the other. Sometimes the over giver is doing so in order to manage residual feelings of guilt which can be left over from childhood. Other codependent traits are excessive apologising which masks a feeling of low self-esteem. All of these feelings and behaviours can lead to emotional exhaustion. In psychotherapy, we explore diversity of experience with empathy, and without judgement.
